Nano Terra, Inc. — Department of Defense SBIR Phase I: A16-101

Description

The goal of this program is to develop and demonstrate a wiring system with the ability to detect faults and autonomously mitigate them through self-healing or self-rerouting. The wiring system must be ruggedized to survive the harsh operating conditions and environment that exist in the hull of military aircraft; this includes nearly constant vibrations, temperature extremes, and potential exposure to chemicals. To be implemented, the system needs to be as compact, versatile, and low weight as possible in addition to being comparable in cost to traditional wiring systems. The system also needs to be designed such that it can be retrofit in existing aircraft without the need for specialized equipment. Nano Terra will team with North Carolina State University (NCSU) to develop an integrated self-healing wiring system. This will build on the developments at NCSU for self-healing technologies, and the means to control their re-routing. Nano Terra will integrate these technologies in the wiring system and will lead the network sensing and control efforts as well as overall system design and integration.
