Description

The specific technical opportunity to be addressed is to take advantage of the current state-of-the-art technology available in the radiation detection space to develop a new Unattended Radiation Detection System (URDS) that will enable rapid deployment and signal integration into the end user's Security Network Platform (SNP). The objective of the Phase I effort is to evaluate component tradeoffs for a radiation detection system that will balance quality detection capability to detect threats moving at through-traffic speed, yet have the size and weight needed for flexible and rapid deployment. The goal is to integrate actionable information into communications that facilitate end-user CONOPS. The two main technical questions that must be answered to determine the feasibility of the proposed innovation/approach are: 1. What are the tradeoffs of cost and efficiency for systems that require flexibility for a wide range of deployment scenarios? 2. What are the communication signals that are most universally integratable into the Security Network Platforms of the field of potential end-users? The expected outcome is component selection for a node that will surpass relevant ANSI standards for detection in at-speed scenarios, with low power for extended deployment, and with a radiation alarm that can be integrated with camera data and other sensor data in and existing SNP for seamless operational response. This node is anticipated to have commercial applications for event security, infrastructure protection, and for surge capacity for urban and border events.
