Description

Mode 5 IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) is an aircraft identification system that is expected to be deployed widely for military and civilian use. To ensure that the IFF can operate effectively in high-density, high volume air traffic scenarios, comprehensive pre-deployment testing must be done to mimic realistic high-volume operational conditions. The goal of this SBIR effort is to develop Mode 5 Waveform Test Bench (M5WTB), a high-fidelity, cost-effective, simulation-based solution for testing Mode 5 receivers. M5WTB will use encryption and software defined radio hardware for injecting secure transmissions from 1000s of simulated l aircraft to realistically stimulate Mode 5 receiver hardware. In Phase 1, we demonstrated an initial proof of concept of M5WTB. In Phase 2, we propose to design and develop a fully functional prototype of the M5WTB solution. The prototype will be based on a scalable Mode 5 model that can operate in real time and will be able to interface with OneSAF to receive mobility and traffic inputs. The prototype will also have visualization, data collection and report generation capabilities. We propose to demonstrate the operation of M5WTB by stimulating a real receiver with simulated signals from 1000+ Mode 5 transmitters.
