Description

ADA Technologies, Inc. (ADA) and Dr. Massoud Pedram at the University of Southern California (USC) have successfully completed a Phase I STTR effort for the development of a lithium ion (Li-ion)/ supercapacitor hybrid electrical energy storage system (HEESS) to afford pulse power characteristics (projected ~10 kW/kg) in a high energy system (100-150 Wh/kg). The system is enabled via a constant current regulator that isolates the battery from the supercapacitor to improve the end-to-end efficiency from the battery to the load while accounting for the relative diminutive rate capability of the high energy Li-ion battery. Pulse power capability is enhanced due to ADAs state-of-the-art (SOTA) supercapacitor that provides 10x the energy (~15 Wh/kg at cell level) of a common supercapacitor significantly improving the duty cycleduration, magnitude and frequency of the pulse. During Phase II, ADA and USC will design, develop and fabricate a fully functional BB-x590 HEESS unit to demonstrate the increased efficiency of the constant current architecture and increased pulsed power of ADAs high energy supercapacitor. We have designed an 8 Ah, 30V (>100 Wh/kg) BB-x590 HEESS with pulse power capability >100 Amps in Phase I to be constructed and demonstrated in Phase II.
