Description
The technical objectives of this proposal are: 1) Fabricate and test ridge-guide, quantum-cascade-laser (QCL) devices employing a broad-gain-spectrum active-region design and suitable for incorporation in the designed high-index-contrast (HC) photonic-crystal (PC) THz, difference-frequency-generation (DFG) QCLs ; 2) Fabricate and test large-aperture HC-PC QCL devices suitable for THz generation via DFG in a single spatial mode at a wavelength of around 9 microns; 3) Design 3-4 THz-emitting devices for delivering 50 mW average power at room temperature (RT); 4) Demonstrate 3-4 THz-emitting devices delivering 50 mW average power at RT; and 4) Demonstrate 1.5 THz-emitting devices delivering over one mW of average power at RT. HC-PC QCLs of a built-in index step an order of magnitude higher than in conventional PC QCL devices will be fabricated, as to achieve stable-beam operation under quasi-CW operating conditions to watt-range coherent mid-infrared average powers, simultaneously at two different wavelengths.
