Description
Americas current electronic warfare (EW) capabilities are insufficient for the modern and future battlefield. In order to safeguard against radio-controlled threats and disrupt enemy communications, our current EW systems blindly jam broad swaths of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS), an approach that also disrupts GPS and blue force data and voice communications. In order to broadband jam vast amounts of spectrum, these systems require large power sources and generate distinct radio frequency (RF) footprints that can be easily tracked and located by adversaries. The size weight and power (SWaP) profiles of these systems are too large for foot-mobile soldiers, and their substantial RF footprints put our warfighters at risk from adversary RF tracking systems. We also lack capable training equipment to adequately prepare our warfighters for the congested and contested EMS in the battlefield, while potential adversaries are publicly displaying advanced EW capabilities that could cripple our warfighter effectiveness if we do not improve our training platforms and procedures. There is an immediate and unmet need for a low-cost, scalable, open-architecture, networked intelligent jammer for warfighter training and foot-mobile operation support.
