Description

Mission Power will develop a megawatt scale power supply for the superconducting magnet on a Tokamak fusion system. Fusion has the potential to generate large amounts of carbon free energy but has many technical challenges to achieve commercial reality. One of those challenges is the power supply for the superconducting magnet. There are multiple high-power coils that each need a power supply. There are multiple special requirements that make the power supply requirement challenging. A single tokamak system requires hundreds of megawatts of peak power with unique requirements. This application desires a modular megawatt scale power system to meet these specific needs. The megawatt scale power system developed in this program will meet the large power requirement. This program will leverage the development of a solar inverter developed in DOE SBIR program: “Low-cost high frequency inverter for utility scale PV.” Mission Power (formerly Mission Drives) has an experienced management and technical team that is well suited to bringing this product into production. The team includes serious technical personnel well skilled in magnetic design, power electronics design, and simulation. Further, the team includes experienced manufacturing and business personnel motivated to get the product to production quickly at the lowest possible cost. The Mission Power chief engineer has experience working on Tokomak Fusion systems and is familiar with the challenges. Mission Power is experienced with the SBIR program and received two DOE SBIR phase I awards in 2022.
