Description
This program develops an optical-grade tape/adhesive with very low particle count (so not to block light) for the purposed of making a protector for fiber optic connector interfaces. The technology is currently designed for MT ferrules, and is called "MT Saver". The process of fabricating the film will be improved: improving the laser cutting process (upgrading to a better laser), limiting the exposure to contamination during processing, and improving the manufacturing inspection process to ensure the MT-Saver quality when shipped to the customer. This program also develops installation and removal tools for the MT Saver application, and associated procedures, for fibers that are in their final installed configuration. There are two categories of field use: 1) working with fiber connectors before installation in higher assembly (i.e., chassis or module), and 2) after installation. Lastly, we perform environmental testing to understand the MT Saver application for flight use.
