Description

The military is interested in new CO2 scrubber materials for diving closed-circuit rebreathers. In particular, it is desired to replace the existing usage of loosely packed soda lime or soda lime cartridges with a new material enabling it to be regenerated for subsequent diving operations. Furthermore, higher CO2 adsorption is needed than the conventional soda lime materials to enable longer dive time operations. Toward these needs, Skyhaven conducted a Phase I project showing a newCO2 scrubber material that is regenerative and that offers longer dive times than soda lime adsorbents. A Phase II project will optimize this new scrubber material, scale its manufacturing to higher production volumes, and conduct verification and validation testing packaging the scrubber material into existing MK 25 Mod 2 adsorbent canisters. These tests will show the new scrubber material enables longer dive times due to higher CO2 adsorption, along with the capability to regenerate the scrubber material releasing CO2 enabling subsequent dive operations.
