FAQ
What is SBIR dependency?
SBIR dependency estimates how much of a firm's federal footprint comes from SBIR/STTR awards versus other federal contracts. Private company revenue is not public, so we use award intensity and, when available, USASpending totals.
What is an SBIR mill?
A practical proxy: firms with 10 or more SBIR/STTR awards over the tracked period are often heavily SBIR-dependent. The Dependency hub ranks these firms and flags high-intensity awardees.
How is dependency percentage calculated?
When non-SBIR federal contract dollars are known: % SBIR = SBIR awards / (SBIR awards + other federal contracts). Otherwise we show award-count intensity bands instead of a percentage.
Is dependency data free?
Yes — summary stats and a top-firm teaser are free. Pro unlocks the full sortable table; Team adds CSV export of the intensity ranking.
