Description

High-frequency transformers are a key piece of modern electronic miniaturization as it pertains to power conversion. The transformers developed in this program will help enable solid-state transformers that have the potential to reduce the size of utility transformers dramatically. This program will develop a high-frequency transformer for use in an electric vehicle fast charger that is directly connected to the medium-voltage grid. The technology demonstrated in this program will help reduce the cost of power conversion in many different power conversion applications. This is critical as we transition the use of fossil fuels to renewable electrical power. This phase I program will design a 150kW high-frequency transformer targeted at this vehicle fast charging application. This program will help leverage advances in high-speed computing to modernize the power conversion space. As the world transitions to a higher dependance on electric power, the number of applications for power conversion grows. By reducing the transformer cost and increasing it voltage isolation capability this program will help this transition significantly. Further, the approach developed in this program will be implemented in such a way that the transformer can be produced at low cost in the United States. This product. developed through the different phases of this DOE program, will be able to directly help disadvantaged communities through making high powered vehicle chargers more affordable helping the rural communities they are installed in. Further this project will help the company grow through designing and building this solution.
