Description

Aircraft Missile Warning Systems are used to detect threats, to alert aircrews, & provide Situational Awareness within sufficient time to perform countermeasures and maneuvers preventing the aircraft from being hit or possibly destroyed. The relatively coarse spectral resolution of legacy MWS sensors & the computational overhead associated with threat declaration & angle of arrival, limits the ability of current MWSs to classify & identify a threat. In Phase I, DHPC will research spectral bands that may be utilized by an adjunct sensor, for threat classification and identification. DHPC will perform modeling and simulation of the scenarios & discrimination criteria and design a Multi-Spectral Adjunct Sensor (MSAS). DHPC will develop the technical foundations of the MSAS, which may consist of either single element detectors, or a linear array, with a variety of spectral bands (UV/Visible/Infrared). Phase I will develop the threat discrimination criteria, and design a laboratory brass-board prototype based on these criteria. Phase II will be the fabrication, testing and delivery of the brass-board. Phase III will transition the MSAS onto the Armys fleet of legacy MWS systems, and leverage some of the prototypes capabilities into the next generation of MWS and future ASE systems.
