Description

Unmanned aerial vehicles are in widespread use by the U.S. military.  The use of hydrogen fuel cells as power sources for these aircraft results in increased mission capabilities and effectiveness.  Current hydrogen storage systems, however, are volumetrically inefficient, and lead to sub-optimal vehicle designs.  Kennon Products, Inc. is proposing to develop a compressed gaseous hydrogen storage system that is conformable, and can be used as a structural member of the aircraft.  Using Kennon’s proprietary Macroweave technology, conformable tanks may be constructed in geometries other than spheres and cylinders while still meeting weight and strength requirements.  Preliminary analyses indicate the basic tank design is sound, and will be successful.  During Phase I, Kennon will create and perform a full feasibility study on a conformable storage system design for use in Navy’s target platform.  Groundwork will also be performed in preparing for the construction and testing of a conformable prototype storage system in Phase II.
