Description
REscan was formed in 2015 as a Stanford Research Institute (SRI International) spinoff company. The company emerged from stealth mode in 2020, and is headquartered on SRI International’s 63-acre research campus in Silicon Valley. REscan has designed and built a patented Spatial Communication System that provides an end-to-end solution for digitizing large indoor and outdoor areas from a human point-of-view. This data is analyzed, segmented, reconstructed, and then accessed via REscan’s intuitive App on any mobile device (or Head-Mounted Display). The system comprises a scanner helmet, a 3D reconstruction and streaming pipeline, and a mobile viewer application. REscan’s technology is capable of scanning up to 250,000 square feet/hour, providing the ability to scan very large facilities quickly and with minimal disruption to operations (all human images are eliminated from the scanned data). The resulting 3D models can also include WIFI and GPS signal strength, the position of IoT sensors in a space, and enable further analysis using ML and AI tools to optimize facility usage, and introduce automated services, all while providing enhanced security and resilience during a crisis. REscan’s system is fully interoperable, and can ingest and process all industry standard point clouds, tessellated meshes, and constructive geometry file types, making it an ideal option where scanned data already exists. REscan is made up of computer vision engineers, programmers, mechanical engineers, commercial real estate entrepreneurs, and veterans of the video game industry. While the commercial real estate market remains a key focus for the company, REscan is growing in new markets, including commercial airports, public schools, retail establishments, and industrial manufacturing facilities. The company was honored with three prestigious Red Dot Design awards in 2021 for its spatial data management system, as well as with a Muse Design Award for its 3D scanning helmet. For this SBIR Phase II program, REscan will create a functional spatial awareness/familiarization training tool for Patrick Space Force Base’s Security Forces Squadron, allowing them to interact in VR for incident training and other tactical planning purposes in exact replicas of the spaces they actually protect and defend. Among other activities, the R&D program will create interoperable 3D digital scans of select physical assets on base, and will enable new functionality in pathfinding, navigation, spatial awareness and scenario-based training in VR. If successful, the capabilities developed during this R&D program can be extended to every Security Forces Squadron and base in the DAF, potentially saving millions of dollars in training and travel funds, not to mention contributing as a force multiplier and helping to keep SFS personnel safe and on-target at their assigned facilities.
