Description
In this Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project, EMAG Technologies Inc. proposes the use of magneto-dielectric substrates for miniaturization of planar antenna designs. Unlike high-permittivity dielectric substrates, magneto-dielectric substrates provide a better opportunity for impedance matching of the miniaturized antenna and thus warranting a higher antenna bandwidth. In this project, we will investigate both natural and artificial magneto-dielectric substrates. Artificial engineered magneto-dielectric substrates can be realized using a combination of embedded circuit metamaterials and reactive impedance surface (RIS) structures. In the Phase I feasibility study of this project, we will perform extensive computer simulation of various antenna designs incorporating magneto-dielectric substrates and will compare their performance with regards to geometrical/dimensional scaling, radiation efficiency, operating bandwidth, effective radar cross section (RCS), etc.
