Description

U.S. DoD expects that the future of combat zones will transition from traditional “battlefield” to “guerilla” tactics. Most battlefield casualties died of their injuries before ever reaching a surgeon. Thus, emphasis must be placed on trauma care optimization, evidence-based improvements in Tactical Combat Casualty Care guidelines in providing timely care with the goal of increasing the survivability of our fighting force in our future wars or counter-terrorism operations. In this SBIR project, we will focus on commercialization of diagnostic and monitoring technologies that are ready for technology demonstration for trauma care and that will have significant positive impact on the traumatic care and patient outcomes of our warfighters. Primelabs has been developing a syringe-delivered wireless sensor device that will accurately measure pressure and temperatures fluctuations in the limb compartments of patients at risk of developing acute compartment syndrome (ACS). Our system will monitor all potential areas of interest without being labor-intensive, relying on highly specialized technicians or be excessively user dependent. We will continue our discussions with USAF 711 Human Performance Wing to optimize and fine-tune the ACS sensor to best meet USAF needs. We aim to provide 2 prototype ACS sensor systems during as deliverable Phase I for examination and physical evaluation. We will optimize the supply chain and manufacturing resources. We will work with the Cleveland Clinic, VA Advanced Platform Technology Center,  US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) that has the necessary clinical models to perform preliminary clinical studies during Phase II.
