BIG METAL ADDITIVE LLC — Department of Defense SBIR Phase I: X224-OCSO1

BIG METAL ADDITIVE LLC — SBIR Phase I award from Department of Defense.

Phase I SBIR feasibility signal

  • Phase I awards fund proof-of-concept work. For capture teams, they mark early interest from Department of Defense in a technical approach.
  • Watch for Phase II follow-ons from the same firm/topic family — that conversion path is where budgets and transition pressure rise.
  • Obligated amount $74,954. Cross-check similar awards in the same agency and technology tags for going-rate context.
  • Topic code X224-OCSO1 links this award to a solicitation family — search the same topic stem for incumbents and recompete timing.

Description

A Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) generates thrust better than traditional turbines because there are no moving parts. It is more efficient and more powerful but only lab scale experiments have been done. Hypersonic vehicle propulsion and gas power generation applications must mature RDE design, performance, and manufacturing with rapid prototype and bench flow test development cycles; followed by prototypes for flight test and transition to a program of record. Big Metal Additive proposes to evaluate RDE CAD design to demonstrate feasibility analytically and virtually for production of unitized monolithic RDE prototypes using the most advanced hybrid metal additive manufacturing capability in the world.
