Description
Current efforts regarding microreactor technologies and applications are centered around military, remote location, and space applications. In order to promote and encourage the use of microreactors beyond these niche markets, novel civilian applications are required. A civilian application for a microreactor will need to utilize the best and worst of the reactor and is best suited for a facility that meets certain criteria.A facility best suited for nuclear power is one that has nearly uniform power requirements, operates nearly continuously, requires dependable nearly uninterruptible power, has a high-skill based personnel pool, has a revenue base that can support a power premium and amortize the initial costs over the operational life, and has physical structures and security necessary for safe operation. This proposal aims to develop a novel civilian application to further bolster and develop the technology and applications for these reactors. NovaTech has conceptualized a civilian application for a microreactor-based facility that meets all of these criteria. This concept is based on a civilian medical/trauma center. A medical facility meets all of the above-mentioned criteria and is applicable to every state and geographic region of the US as well as most areas of the world. In addition to these baseline criteria, NovaTech will seek to utilize what the typical layman or nuclear power critics deem as negative aspects of the reactor to also benefit the facility and further enhance the attraction of using a microreactor.
