Description

Systems & Technology Research (STR) proposes to design a nanosatellite payload in support of Warfighter ISR via Distributed Satellites (WISRDS), a radio frequency (RF) signals intelligence (SIGINT) solution to rapidly provide actionable information to special operations forces in the tactical theater from satellites in low Earth orbit. The payload consists of a wideband, tunable, miniature antenna, enabling detection of a wide range of emitters of interest, as well as advanced SIGINT and synchronization-enhanced distributed geolocation algorithms implemented on a space-hardened processor. The STR-LIGHTT synchronization algorithm is an enabling technology to push distributed geolocation accuracies down to the sub-meter level and is a key component to be implemented in the payload. The program will consist of 1) mission analysis in which trade studies on CONOPS, command and control, and satellite constellation design will be considered leading to the definition of payload and constellation requirements, 2) prototype software development in which existing algorithms will be integrated for the WISRDS payload, and 3) payload design in which the antenna and processor hardware design will be developed. The Phase I effort will result in a payload design that will be refined, prototyped, and demonstrated under Phase II for eventual transition to special operations forces.
