TOUCHSTONE RESEARCH LABORATORY, LTD. — Department of Defense SBIR Phase II: MDA14-014

TOUCHSTONE RESEARCH LABORATORY, LTD. — SBIR Phase II award from Department of Defense.

Phase II SBIR prototype / development signal

  • Phase II is where Department of Defense funds deeper R&D after feasibility. Incumbents with Phase II history are serious competitors on adjacent topics.
  • Use this award as past-performance context and to map customer organizations for STRATFI/TACFI-style transition planning.
  • At $2,003,044, this is a large obligation for typical SBIR Phase sizing — worth reviewing for scope breadth and teaming opportunity.
  • Topic code MDA14-014 links this award to a solicitation family — search the same topic stem for incumbents and recompete timing.

Description

Touchstone proposes to continue the development of an innovative combination of materials to provide protection from lightning and heat for large missile systems. Touchstone Research Laboratory (Touchstone) has been developing thermal protection system (TPS) concepts around its carbon foam product (CFOAM®) for several years. This material is a lightweight, high-temperature material with a low coefficient of thermal expansion and tailorable thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. CFOAM can be easily combined with other materials to create a multi-layered system with additional protection from lightning and other threats. This sequential Phase II will build on the accomplishments of the Phase I and Phase II efforts and extend the technology readiness level and initiate design and process validation.
