Description
As the human population grows, it is critical to decrease consumption of materials from the planet and its ecosphere. The world adds 70 million people annually. The UN expects the population to grow to over 9 billion 2050. Climate change, soil degradation, unstable water supply all reduce the ability of traditional farming to satisfy food needs. Population increase and scarcity of resources and food lead to strife and conflict, particularly in impoverished, politically socially unstable regions and forward operating positions. Approximately 70% of agricultural land, 30% of land on earth, is used to raise livestock. Using more land for livestock is neither feasible nor sustainable. Insects offer a sustainable solution, requiring less water, feed and land than other livestock. Genetic engineering could enhance nutrients such as amino acids, protein, Vitamins A, C, D, K, Iron, Calcium, Iodine and others. Insects hold promise beyond food for biomatierials including pharmaceuticals, plastics, vaccines, enzymes, antibiotics, antibodies, color pigments, dyes, flavors, and many others. Our innovation is genetically improved insects for nutrients, food, and useful biomaterials to sustainably benefit peace, stability and biodiversity. We will develop new lines of insects that are disease resistant, high nutrient value, lower in allergens and produce valuable bioproducts.
