Description

Establish means and methods to perform comprehensive mechanical characterization using miniature tensile specimens for highly irradiated materials. The solution should aid in dramatic reduction of irradiated material waste and provide feasibility for easy incorporation and remote operation within hot cell environments. Based on previous research, an Advanced Mechanical Test (AMT) test bed incorporated with state of the art Digital Image Correlation (DIC) capability will be designed and prototyped for testing miniature tensile specimens. The system will enable remote operation and will include modularity for maintenance and multiple functionality. The validity of the property measurements and possible correlation with existing standard test methods will also be investigated. The main aim of this work is commercialize an Advanced Mechanical Test (AMT) system for so that one can make comprehensive material characterization economical and effortless for various industry sectors. An in-depth understanding of material performance leads to improved reliability and safety in designs, this leads to longer life spans of components and drop in costs of production and maintenance. This technology is applicable to all industries and is particularly beneficial to nuclear, aerospace, and automobile industries. This technology will also immensely aid in improving the efficiency and robustness of existing quality and inspection sectors of the industry.
