Description

Baker Engineering Inc. (BEI) proposes the exploration of advanced material technologies to improve Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) engine durability, thermal and wear resistance, and strength within critical internal engine components. Specifically during the Phase I effort, BEI will research the use of advanced materials and coatings on static engine components including cylinders, blocks and crank cases. Reciprocating engine components, including pistons and crankshaft assemblies will also be evaluated. The use of advanced materials and coatings in bearing design will also be explored. Some of the advanced materials to be evaluated include anti-wear coatings, thermal barrier coatings, lubrication film coatings, ceramics, titanium alloys, titanium metal matrix composites (MMC), and ceramic matrix composites (CMC). BEI will utilize advanced design and analysis tools, including thermal Finite Element Analysis, to evaluate the new components. The technological expertise and the experience in advanced engine development of BEI will drive this program to obtain the best possible combination of performance and durability enhancements for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) engines. The Phase I effort focus on research and analysis, and will result in the manufacture of initial prototype components. Additional hardware manufacturing, and testing, would take place during a Phase II program.
