Description
Hyperion Technology Group Inc. (Hyperion) in an effort to address the needs laid out in the solicitation A16-112 titled Next Generation Intelligent Power Distribution Unit (IPDU) for Tactical Microgrids plans to develop an intelligent power distribution system that will make tactical microgrids more robust, while reducing fuel consumption. The key advantage of the Hyperion proposed approach to an IPDU is the ability to shed loads based on mission priorities to match the available output of the microgrid to prevent total power failure. To accomplish this, the lowest priority loads will be temporarily switched off so the prime power source is not overloaded or prevent the circuit breakers from tripping. The current approach that power managers and tactical microgrid design engineers must use is to size generators for worse case loading, which typically results in generator capacity several times larger than the average power levels. The ability to shed loads based on priority will facilitate the use of smaller generators which in turn can operate closer to ratings resulting in increased efficiency (smaller generators equal less fuel) with less maintenance (due to less wet stacking).
