Description

UAV engines have a mean time between overhauls of about 400-500 hours, after which the engine is torn down for inspection. One of the primary findings during this overhaul is the presence of abundant carbon deposits in the engines and the combustion areas. There are a number of issues caused by carbon build up. When large carbon deposits are formed, they reduce the smooth air flow which can result in rough running, smoke, reduced power and fuel economy. To reduce carbon fouling and increase UAV engine durability, In this proposed SBIR program, IBC Materials & Technologies, in conjunction with our partners Northwest UAV (NWUAV), will develop a novel chemically inert, thermally protective coating layer based on IBCs Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) coating technology. The PEO coatings will provide a very unique chemically and thermally stable ceramic surface on aluminum engine components that will significantly improve the durability of UAV engine components.
