Description

This proposal aims to develop a predictive model for characterizing Hydroxyl Terminated PolyButadiene (HTPB) polymer binder resin, used in existing and emerging solid rocket motors. The model will use modern analytical methods to correlate HTPB polymer system chemical and physical characteristics with gum-stock and formulation end-use properties. The objective is to produce a reliable HTPB variant and associated specifications that meet updated military specifications and production practices. Phase I will identify and/or develop combinations of key analytical methods and generate needed characterization data. Phase II will refine the HTPB polymer analytical methods and validate the predictive model. The final model will ensure that a fully tested lot of HTPB meets required gum-stock pot life, cure profile, and aging characteristics. The proposed technology has direct applications in the military for rocket motors, ejection seats, and related propellants, as well as potential commercial uses in the aerospace industry.
