Description
Just as an engineer starts solving a statics problem by drawing a free body diagram, many engineering analyses start from a 3D model. Modern conceptual aircraft design processes utilizing many kinds of physics-based analyses require a 3D geometry model at their core. Creating a useful 3D geometry modeling tool and embedding it within an MDAO framework has unique challenges. Geometries can be defined many different ways by an endless number of discrete and continuous variables. While some analyses determine geometry, others depend on it. Analysis tools can require vastly differing representations of a single model. A useful geometry tool needs to present a robust and streamlined process for defining geometries and be capable of translating the geometry into formats used by other embedded tools. Open Vehicle Sketch Pad (OpenVSP) is a 3D parametric geometry tool that has been evolving for nearly thirty years. It has been designed for use in MDAO frameworks and for design space exploration. OpenVSP’s development continues and the topic of this proposal is itself evidence that OpenVSP does not meet all of the evolving needs of MEAD engineers and likely other engineers. The tasks outlined in this proposal aim to improve OpenVSP and address any shortcomings and establish two-way communication with MDAO tools. Fortunately, OpenVSP has a flexible design amenable to any required improvements—eliminating the need for a “Start Over” project. Building on OpenVSP leverages decades of conceptual design 3D modeling experience and connections to myriad engineering analysis tools and design frameworks.
