Description
In Phase II, we developed a new system for pedestrian detection, tracking and counting. In this system, both IR LED stereo camera and laser scanner are selected for use. This Phase II system was field-tested at a few cities and achieved a counting accuracy about 97% over 5,000 pedestrians counted. The system can also stream the ped counts and images to a remote server. Based on the feedback from participating DOT agencies, in Phase IIB, we will make a portable product for pedestrian counting at street intersections with the capability of pedestrian collision warning for transit bus drivers. It has the features including (1) portable ped counting system that can be installed anywhere and powered by solar power; (2) a device for pedestrian-bus collision warning for transit bus drivers; (3) system is capable of counting “illegal-walking” pedestrians for street intersection/mid-block planning (4) interface with all major traffic controllers through NTCIP and SDLC; (5) dynamic pedestrian timing for intelligent intersections; and (6) smart data streaming through city wireless communication network. Both Tucson DOT and MassDOT will participate in the field tests of this product. In addition, MBTA will participate in the field test of pedestrian-bus collision avoidance system.
