Description

Momentum Optics has developed an advanced manufacturing technology that leverages recent breakthroughs in high-power Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) lasers, machine learning, and computational metrology to machine optical components about an order of magnitude faster and less expensively than currently possible while, in many cases, exceeding state-of-the-art performance. The patented technology uses Thermally Reactive Chemical Etching (TRACE) to machine parts such as free-form mirrors and lenses, phase plates, and beam shapers. Free-form optics, for example, can provide significant savings in cost, size, weight, and power (C-SWaP) by replacing several components in a multi-element system while achieving better performance. In addition to improved C-SWaP, Momentum Optics’ digital-first approach optimizes supply chain resiliency and mission readiness. Today, optics are manufactured using several tools for rough machining, finishing, and part characterization. The production cycle can be 6-10 weeks long. On the other hand, Momentum Optics uses one machine with in-tool part characterization. As such, in the future, it will be possible to order optics without a human-in-the-loop. The process will be part of an automated, all-digital thread that reduces lead-times from months to days. Moreover, TRACE is scalable from single digit production to high volumes, bringing one efficient manufacturing solution to the industry.
