Description
On average, a pedestrian is killed every 2 hours and injured every 8 minutes in traffic crashes. 73% of these fatalities occur in urban areas. The SmartCross system aims to reduce the risk of vehicle-pedestrian crashes by providing situational awareness to the pedestrian as well as the vehicle approaching a crosswalk. The system makes use of the proliferation of smartphones to provide audio, visual and haptic feedback to pedestrians and alert/warn them of imminent danger. The smartphone application also provides signal timing data along with WALK, DO NOT WALK messages to the pedestrian. If a pedestrian approaches a crosswalk he/she intends to use, a WALK signal can be requested right from the smartphone application without pressing the physical button at the intersection. This is especially useful for pedestrians with vision and mobility impairments. The SmartCross system is designed to be a scalable and cost efficient solution that can be used as a framework for a host of V2X applications that can be deployed in the future. All components of the system are designed to be compatible with Connected Vehicle testbeds across the country.
