Description
Vuronyx Technologies and Prof. Marya Lieberman at the University of Notre Dame will develop paper analytical devices (idPADs) to presumptively identify illicit drugs. All the reagents needed to perform twelve different chemical color tests are stored on the idPAD. The user rubs the powder to be tested across the PAD, then dips the PAD in water to activate the tests. Within five minutes, a color bar code is generated by the reactions of the chemical tests and substances in the sample. The color bar code can identify a wide range of functional groups and materials that may be present in an illicit substance. No handling of chemicals is necessary. The operator can read the test results by eye, or take a photograph with a cell phone for analysis by a neural network. In Phase 1, we will deliver a demo system (PADs + phone app) that will identify opioids, cannabinoids, and common cutting agents, and distinguish illicit drugs from many legitimate pharmaceuticals and common household or industrial substances.
