Description

This project aims to study the use of electrified power take-off (ePTO) and hybrid drive system technology on non-tactical medium and heavy duty vehicles that utilize transmissions from Allison Transmission.  PTO based Plug-In Hybrid systems have yet to be designed and demonstrated for existing Air Force fleet vehicles and use patterns, so while the enabling technology exists and is cost effective, the specific systems the army needs have yet to be specified, developed and demonstrated. Electrification of the PTO and the ability to provide more power to the drivetrain through the PTO provides a means for lower cost, extremely effective vehicle electrification.  The ability to deliver increased electrical power for vehicle systems and the ability to quietly export power to other electrical loads from large vehicle mounted batteries can also be beneficial. Odyne’s electrification systems are the only ePTO and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) systems approved to interface with automatic transmissions from Allison Transmission, fully retaining the warranty of the transmission.  Allison Transmission is the primary provider of transmissions for medium and heavy duty vehicles within the Department of Defense. Odyne’s system complements the existing and proven drivetrain components of non-tactical vehicles, and provides strong benefits, especially on vehicles that require substantial power while stationary Previous testing of Odyne ePTO and Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology with the U.S. Department of Energy has shown up to 50% reduction in fuel use and GHG emissions and up to 90% reduction in NOx emissions on a typical medium/heavy duty work truck. The project will seek to identify potential applications within the U.S. Air Force non-tactical vehicle fleet for ePTO and hybrid drive systems operating through the PTO, develop and refine duty-cycle information specific to the application of ePTO Electrification technology, and provide design towards initial application support of demonstration vehicles agreed to by the Air Force.
