Description
The US Air Force and partner forces have a significant mission to provide perioperative expeditionary medical support across the continuum of surgical emergencies encountered in the field. Through adaptations proposed in this STTR, SimX’s Virtual Reality Medical Simulation System (VRMSS) will facilitate training capabilities in the realm of surgical nursing to support the USAF 6th Medical Group elite nursing forces and advanced surgical teams, addressing a significant unmet mission need. Under the Air Force’s Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concept, Air Force nurses must be prepared to treat both injury and illness in austere environments for longer periods of time and with limited resources and reach-back. This will require a renewed focus on surgical (perioperative) nursing care in the setting of damage control resuscitation and surgery conducted in non-standard environments. High fidelity virtual simulation can be tailored to meet the full spectrum of medical training requirements of the future operating environment, and SimX’s commercial solution is uniquely suited to replicate the psychosocial, environmental, and operational realism required to enable surgical nursing units to train in realistic settings and achieve maximal sustainment and readiness.
