Description

With nearly 30 traffic fatalities caused by alcohol-related impacts every day in the Unites States, efforts have been made to reduce recidivism of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) incidents, including the implementation and use of Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs). However, IIDs do not impact non-compliance rates once the IID programs are completed. There is a need for a mobile application that significantly reduces recidivism of DWI offenders by supplementing information imported from IID devices with smartphone technologies that can detect intoxication and provide Evidence-Based Treatment (EBT) information tailored to each individual user. Design Interactive, Inc. (DI) proposes the development of a Mobile Intoxication management Tool (MIT), which will provide IID users with frequent feedback, close monitoring, and EBTs to improve health and safety behaviors, thereby resulting in decreased recidivism. MIT will leverage DI’s Mobile Stress and Anger Management Toolkit (MSAT) mobile application, which monitors the behavioral state of users struggling with stress, anger, and anxiety. The MIT tool will consist of four components: an integration with IIDs; a mobile user support tool with classification algorithms to monitor offenders’ IID performance in real-time and analyze overall patterns; a cloud-based database; and a web portal for communication with monitoring agencies.
