Description

Background There is a stated operational deficiency for realistic, cost effective live-fire tactical combat training systems for range targetry in ground-ground and air-ground training scenarios. Despite incremental technological advances, ground-ground live-fire target training still largely relies on static targets or slow, predictable and expensive rail systems, leaving a gap between the lack of realism in the training environment and the scenarios an operator will face in the field. For this requirement, MVP’S HEKTR (Humanoid Engageable Kinetic Training Robot) advanced target system was developed. The HEKTR mobile target platform meets identified requirements for future training and technology innovation at ranges and shoot houses.  MVP’s HEKTR is a transformational, next generation live-fire training system.  With the speed and agility to mimic opposing forces, HEKTR improves the speed of learning and skills mastery by presenting a more intuitive humanoid target, forcing battlefield decision-making and field-relevant experience:  shoot-no shoot decisions, mounted/dismounted engagements, squad live fire evolutions, close-quarters battle (CQB) engagement, outdoor ranges and indoor/MOUT. Using interchangeable and replaceable targets for 360° live-fire shot detection of 9mm, 5.56, and 7.62 rounds, HEKTR’s humanoid targets provide instant feedback with programmable sensors in lethal and non-lethal zones. The objective of the proposed Phase I study is to determine the specific requirements for, and to assess the feasibility of fully integrating existing HEKTR mobile target technology into the infrastructure of the premier shooting range being built at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico to deliver next-generation, highly dynamic training capability. Technical Objectives Develop requirements for geo-fencing/ assurance of HEKTR operation within SDZs on USAF training range. Establish feasibility of RSO-programmable target autonomy for defined, objective measurement of shooter performance and proficiency improvement Develop requirements for Non-lethal return fire capability and determine performance specifications Scope The work plan for the Phase I will lead to a set of Key Performance Parameters required for full integration of the HETKR platform into the premier shooting range being built for the  351 Special Warfare Training Squadron (351 SWTS)  at Kirtland AFB, NM.   The plan entails close collaboration of the training cadre at 351 SWTS so that capabilities being developed will fully meet their requirements for implementation.
