Description

Pison Technology and VRgineers Inc. have developed the best-in-class commercially available virtual reality (VR) head-mounted or helmet-mounted display (HMD), the ISLE HMD. The ISLE HMD consists of: (1) a 4K per eye and super-wide field-of-view (180-deg diagonally) VR HMD; (2) a multimodal interaction suite (including support for eye-tracking, gesture detection, integrated haptics); (3) support for several leading flight simulation engines (e.g., Prepar3D, DCS, VBS3, XPlane); and (4) optional mixed reality support to enable immersive visual effects while piloting a physical cockpit. Advancement of the ISLE HMD technology is being executed with funding from the Naval Air Warfare Center, with the goal of replacing dome manned flight simulation displays for Aviator training. The proposed effort will package the ISLE HMD with the commercially available off the shelf (COTS) components necessary to provide a high-fidelity and immersive lightweight and modular simulator (ISLE-LMS) for aircrew training. ISLE-LMS will include the hardware (e.g., flight chair, HOTAS, GPU-equipped gaming PC, optional motion platform), software (e.g., flight simulation engine, scenario authoring, command / trainer module), and transit cases necessary to provide a portable and affordable solution, which integrates leading COTS gaming and professional simulation technologies via a modular and extensible system architecture.
