Description

Terves and OSU will partner to optimize casting and extrusion limits to produce a high strength (>60ksi YS), rare earth free, low cost ($20/lb) formable magnesium alloy for future aircraft components. In the Phase I, Terves will produce extruded plate for forging and rolling stock. The phase II will focus on the optimization and scale up of forging and rolling conditions to produce sheet for aircraft skin and forgings for aircraft components.  In the short 5 month project, Dr. Alan Luo and his team from Ohio State University will provide chemistry limits for AXM5303 alloy that was previously investigated and has achieved 65ksi UTS, 60ksi YS and 4% elongation in lab trials. This alloy will be produced at scale in 9"X30" extrusion billets that will be extruded into 5" wide by 1/2" thick plate for characterization and further rolling and forging trials. Terves, with support from Ohio State University will characterize the resulting extrusions for microstructure and mechanical properties, and post process the plate through upset forging and rolling to confirm formability and viability of producing thin walled, high strength structures for further development and scale up in the Phase II program.
