Description

Installation of fasteners and bushings is a perennial problem for the FRCs and remote detachments, since wet-install failures and installation of bare bushings leads to rapid galvanic corrosion. This program will develop a wet-install approach based on Al-rich primer for galvanic corrosion inhibition on bushings and fasteners installed in aluminum airframes. Electrochemical modeling developed under an ONR SBIR will be used to predict the performance of Al-rich wet install primer with and without a resistive sol-gel coating on the bushing. This modeling will be used to guide improved formulation of the primer by NAWC-AD for optimum performance in this application, while the sol-gel formulation will be optimized by its developer, Luna Innovations. The approach will be validated on test bushings and the final product will be modeled and corrosion-tested on flanged and straight bushings of several bushing materials installed in aluminum by shrink-fit and Forcemate methods.
