Description
We propose a methodology for modeling and computationally optimizing anodic metal-filled primers using extensions of approaches that we already employ for corrosion analysis. Modeling will be developed using Star CCM+, a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) platform from CD-Adapco. We presently use this for corrosion analysis when we need to incorporate computational fluid dynamics to take the variable electrolyte geometry explicitly into account. The model of the primer will be built using a combination of CAD and image processing software in conjunction with Computational Fluid Dynamics and electrochemical modeling, to explicitly take into account the 3-D geometry, electrochemistry and electrolyte behavior in the resin. Because Star CCM+ is available to NAVAIR on the DoD Highly Parallel Computing (HPC) Platform, Corrdesa will build models that NAVAIR can modify and use for optimization. To make the modeling accessible to M&P engineers, Corrdesa will also supply a simplified GUI, and engineering tools based on extensions of Corrosion Djinn and relationships derived from the full CAE model. In order to fully understand the electrochemistry and the effects of geometry, metal pigment size, primer morphology, etc. we will use a combination of Elsyca CorrosionMaster and modifications and extensions of Corrdesas Corrosion Djinn.
