Description
Recent advances in Microwave Photonics (MWP) have continued to make the case for the deployment of systems to address challenging communications and EW applications on military shipboard and aerospace platforms. In addition to reduced space, weight, and power (SWaP) and improved immunity to electromagnetic interference, these new technologies can enable wider bandwidth operation at frequencies well into the millimeter wave range of the spectrum. One of the main obstacles to implementing MWP is the lack of adequate fiber optic cables. In addition to the harsh environmental requirements of all fiber optic cables, MWP cables must perform additional functions and therefore face additional requirements. Development of a military fiber optic cable for analog optical communication operating at no less than 45 GHz in air and sea platform fiber optic links will dramatically improve the capability of MWP systems.
